What to Expect During Your First Chiropractic Visit

March 2nd, 2026chiropracticTCHC

During your first chiropractic appointment, the focus is on familiarizing the chiropractor with your well-being. The main goal is to identify the cause of your discomfort and assess whether chiropractic treatment is suitable for you. Typically, appointments last between 45 and 60 minutes.

The appointment begins with a review of your health history. You will need to fill out forms detailing various aspects, such as your current pain, when it started, what makes it worse or better, past medical procedures, current medications, and other health concerns. Providing accurate and detailed information is essential. For example, if your lower back pain began after lifting a heavy object a few weeks ago, it's important to mention this. Similarly, if your neck pain is associated with headaches that occur twice a week, include this level of detail. The more precise your information, the more effective the chiropractor can be in helping you.

After reviewing your forms, the chiropractor will discuss your symptoms with you. You will describe your symptoms, including the location of the pain, any related sensations, the type of pain (sharp, dull, burning), and if you experience numbness or tingling. If you have had X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans, it's advisable to bring the reports for reference, which can help streamline the process and guide the care effectively.

Next, a physical examination will be conducted, similar to a routine check-up at a primary care facility but with a focus on assessing your spine and joints. This may include evaluating your posture, testing your range of motion, checking for tender spots along the spine, testing your reflexes, assessing muscle strength, and examining sensation in your extremities. For instance, if you have lower back pain, you may be asked to perform specific movements to assess any associated leg pain, which can provide valuable diagnostic information.

If any concerning signs are noted during the examination, such as significant weakness or issues with bowel or bladder control, immediate medical referral will be arranged.

After the examination, the chiropractor will explain their findings to you, ensuring you understand the underlying cause of your pain, the suitability of chiropractic treatment, the recommended number of visits, what each visit will entail, and the expected costs. Don't hesitate to ask questions to better understand the reasons behind the proposed treatment plan.

In many cases, treatment can begin on the same day, often with a spinal adjustment, a quick and controlled maneuver applied to a joint. This adjustment may produce a popping sound as gas is released from the joint, similar to cracking knuckles. While most people experience minimal discomfort during the adjustment, some may feel slight soreness afterward, typically resolving within 24 hours.

Your treatment plan may include additional therapies such as stretching and strength exercises, ice or heat application, electrical muscle stimulation, and guidance on posture and lifting techniques. For example, if you have a desk job that involves prolonged sitting, you may receive advice on adjusting your workstation for better ergonomics.

To prepare for your appointment, wear comfortable clothing like athletic shorts and a T-shirt, and try to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. Remember to bring your ID and insurance information.

Be open about your goals. If you aim to resume running without pain, share this goal with your chiropractor. Clearly defined goals help guide your care plan.

The first visit is about understanding your body and creating a personalized strategy. With a clear understanding of the process, you can approach your recovery confidently and actively participate in improving your well-being.
