Today, let’s talk about something called sciatica. It’s a kind of pain that can make life tough, but chiropractic care can help! Let’s learn what sciatica is and how I help people feel better.

Sciatica is pain that starts in your lower back and shoots down one leg, sometimes to your foot. It feels like a burning, tingling, or sharp zap. Imagine a garden hose with water flowing through it. If you step on the hose, the water doesn’t flow right. That’s what happens with sciatica. A nerve called the sciatic nerve gets pinched or irritated, and it causes pain.

The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in your body. It starts in your lower spine and runs down your leg. When something presses on it, like a bone out of place or a tight muscle, you feel that sciatica pain. Things like sitting too long, lifting something heavy, or even an injury from sports can cause it. For example, a 6th grader might get it from carrying a heavy backpack or falling during gym class.

So, how does chiropractic care help? As a chiropractor, I don’t use medicine or shots. Instead, I use my hands
to find and fix problems in your spine. When you visit me, I check your back to see if any bones, called vertebrae, are out of line. These misalignments can pinch the sciatic nerve. I do a gentle push called an adjustment to move the bone back where it belongs. It’s quick, safe, and usually feels good!

After an adjustment, the pressure on the sciatic nerve goes away. That means less pain and easier moving. I had a patient, a mom, who couldn’t walk far because of sciatica. After a few adjustments, she was back to playing soccer with her kids! Chiropractic care also helps your body heal itself by making sure your nerves work right.

Besides adjustments, I'll give tips to help at home.

Here are some easy ones for you:

Sit up straight. Don’t slouch at your desk or on the couch.

Stretch gently. Try touching your toes to loosen your back.

Move around. Walking or light exercise keeps your spine happy.

Use a small backpack. Heavy bags can hurt your back.

Rest well. Sleep on a firm bed to support your spine.

Chiropractic care isn’t just for fixing sciatica—it keeps your whole body healthy. If you’re in Bayonne, Jersey City, or Hoboken, come visit me at the Visco Spine & Joint Center. We help with sciatica, back pain, and more. If you or your parents notice leg pain that won’t go away, ask about chiropractic care.

Taking care of your spine is like taking care of your favorite toy—keep it in good shape, and it works great! If you have questions, talk to your parents or a doctor. Stay healthy and keep moving, friends!
